The fall season is always an exciting time. The change in seasons, the peak of colors and the anticipation of the holidays all make for a recipe of good memories.
Garfield Park is a park for all seasons. And we’d like you to think all seasons when you think of Garfield Park. How many of your special memories are tied to a park? Garfield Park?
Garfield Park is a vibrant park, full of sights, sounds and colors each season. It’s the oldest city park in Indianapolis, opening in 1873. Envisioned and designed by well-known city father George Kessler, the park boasted the most detail of all the other city parks at that time and to follow. Over time, additional treasures were added to the mix – the Pagoda, Sunken Gardens, Conservatory, swimming pool, Burrello Family Center, and the MacAllister Center for the Performing Arts – plus others. It’s the most dynamic city park in Indianapolis, and perhaps one of the best urban parks in the country.
The Friends of Garfield Park was founded in the late 1990s to help be a steward of this historic park. We work hand in hand with the city and Indy Parks to ensure the preservation of the park and raise money for park projects and programs. My (Lynda) association with this park has spanned over 50 years, as both the Family Center manager and as a volunteer with the Friends of Garfield Park. Garfield Park is a special place, and we’d like more people to experience it.
Would you consider making a year-end contribution in support of this historic park? Your support through the Friends of Garfield Park will help kick off the new year and enable youth programming, special events and the preservation of historic park assets.
